APONTE, RAQUEL, 90, of Manhattan, NY, died peacefully on Friday, December 12, 2025.
Raquel Aponte, a woman of quiet strength, deep love, and remarkable resilience, passed away on Friday morning at the age of 90. Born on September 13, 1935, in Puerto Rico, Raquel’s life was defined by courage, devotion to family, and an unwavering spirit.
The daughter of Luis Rosado and Josephina Baez, Raquel moved to New York City in 1942 with her mother and five siblings: Lucy, Elizabeth, Louisa, Carmen, and George. Although her mother spoke little English, she raised six hardworking and determined children. Raquel, the last surviving sibling, carried their legacy with grace and pride.
Raquel devoted her early years to raising her daughters, Raquel and Judith, caring for her eldest until her passing at age 21, and guiding Judith with the same fierce love. Their relationship became one of deep partnership, trust, and shared resilience, a bond that shaped both of their lives.
In 1979, Raquel began a new chapter with the New York City Department of Transportation. She worked as a meter maid and later as a traffic agent, confidently directing major Manhattan intersections, before transitioning to administrative support for DOT Commissioners. She retired with honor on October 8, 2002.
Raquel took great pride in Judith’s accomplishments and believed wholeheartedly in her daughter’s potential. Her constant reminder, “You can do it,” became a guiding force that helped Judith achieve milestones as a first-generation college graduate, PhD, and leader in nursing and academia. Raquel also treasured her travels with Judith, creating cherished memories across the U.S. and around the world.
Raquel’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to the many healthcare providers who supported her with compassion, skill, and kindness, especially in recent years. Their care helped her reach the joyful milestone of her 90th birthday this past September.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Judith Aponte, and Judith’s spouse, Jaime, along with extended family and friends who were touched by her warmth, honesty, and quiet strength. Raquel’s presence was a blessing, and her memory will continue to shine brightly in the lives of all who loved her.
